Аnnotation: On August 13 (25), 1897, in the central part of the Vyatka province, one of the strongest historical earthquakes occurred within the northern East European Platform. The seismic event is representatively provided with macroseismic information. Reports of macroseismic events were received over a wide area. Based on macroseismic descriptions in primary sources, 84 questionnaires were compiled. Primary data on macroseismic manifestations were published in local newspapers of that time without delay and collected directly from residents who felt the earthquake. Using new approaches, the work analyzes macroseismic information from historical sources and presents a new map of the macroseismic field. As a result of the research, we obtained the following values of the source parameters on August 13 (25), 1897 event: epicenter coordinates 58.77 ± 0.2° N, 49.73 ± 0.4° E, depth h = 13 ± 10 km, magnitude MLH = 4.5 ± 0.1. The parameters of the Vyatka earthquake of 1897 refined in the paper are recommended to be used in the problems of seismic zoning for this region.
