Аnnotation: In this article, the maximum possible magnitudes Mmax of crustal earthquakes on Sakhalin Island are determined using various empirical formulas. Based on a comparison of the obtained values with the real magnitudes given in the consolidated seismic catalog, conclusions were drawn about the reliability of these empirical dependencies, which are used, among other things, to assess the seismic hazard of critical facilities, for example, nuclear power plants. Using computer geodynamic modeling, areas of maximum compressive stresses were identified, the configuration of which was taken into account when contouring seismic domains. The information content of this methodological approach is shown, which makes it possible to make an assumption about the possibility of its application for solving seismotectonic problems in other regions.
