Keywords: Paykend, Bukhara oasis, seismic damage and destruction, historical earthquakes, kinematic indicators of deformation, macroseismic survey, archaeoseismology.
Аnnotation: The results of macroseismic and archaeoseismological studies of the ancient city of Paykend (Bukhara region, Uzbekistan) are considered. It has been established that it has been destroyed by earthquakes more than once. This is evidenced by the specific damage to his buildings: the separation of adjacent perpendicular walls of the city towers from each other and the separation of the outer shell from the main mass of the walls; the systematic tilting of the walls, the upward-opening cracks, the thrown debris of the walls against the slope of the terrain, the rotation of the wall fragments around vertical axis, etc. One of the earthquakes whose destruction is described in this article is dated to the beginning of the 5th century and the end of the 6th century, while the other is dated to 942. The estimated intensity of each event is I0 = (8–9)±1 points. Continued archaeoseismological research of the monuments of the Bukhara oasis can provide a more comprehensive description of the region's strong historical earthquakes, allowing for a more accurate assessment of the seismic hazard in Bukhara province.
