Keywords: historical earthquakes, macroseismology, sources of macroseismic information.
Аnnotation: Relationships among different newspapers in Russia in 1809–1819 are studied having the goal understanding which ones supplies original information on earthquakes. It is demonstrated that they were not used fully and truly when complying basic historical earthquake catalogues of Russia. Strangely, instead of using original information from Russian newspapers, texts from their translated versions, often abridged and distorted, plus descriptive earthquake catalogues complied in Paris and London, were quoted. It is shown that several communication channels transmitting messages from local places to the center were active in Russia. Not all information was published; some evidences were kept in archives, usually in form of official reports to central administration. Some information is left in personal communications. Therefore, historical earthquake studies can not be limited to newspapers.
