Аnnotation: Previously known data on Altai, 1887, earthquake is supplemented by information from newspaper Kavkaz issued in Tiflis. It is concluded that regular searching of sources of information has to be organized based on the knowledge of history of regional and central press and developing of archives and libraries. Sporadic researches from project to project limited to sources available in the target region create the risk of missing initial macroseismic information. New data and application of rigid procedure for epicenter locating brings revision of previous solution of January 2/14 Altai 1887 earthquake.
