Keywords: Middle Baikal, earthquake, source parameters, macroseismic data.
Аnnotation: We study in detail source parameters, seismotectonic position, and macroseismic effects of the February 3, 2016 earthquake occurred in the Middle Baikal region. It is one of relatively few instrumentally recorded seismic events in the northern part of the South Baikal basin which is localized in the area with a weak level of seismic activity. Earthquake source parameters are calculated from the joint inversion of surface wave amplitude spectra and P-wave first-motion polarities: a scalar seismic moment (M0 = 1.60•1016 Nm), moment magnitude (Mw = 4.8), source depth (h = 22 km) and focal mechanism which is almost a pure normal fault. The focal mechanism corresponds to a general geodynamic pattern in the Middle Baikal region. The earthquake was felt over a wide territory, with the macroseismic effects of IV MSK-64 scale being observed at the distances up to 360 km. Macroseismic data were collected by mailing questionnaires to the administration of settlements, as well as by using an online survey of the population of the Southern Baikal region. The obtained results are of interest for seismic hazard reassessment in the Southern Baikal region.
